Zen Meditation and Calligraphy Workshop

Shinzan Miyamae (宮前 心山, born 2 nd July 1935) is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist Rōshi (‘master’ or ‘teacher’). He restored Gyōkuryuji, the hermitage of Edo Period Zen Master Bankei Yotaku Zenji in central Japan and has taught there since 1990. In this workshop you will learn or refresh several meditation techniques followed by expression of Self using paint and brush under direction of Shinzan Rōshi. His calligraphy works have been widely collected both in Japan and internationally.

Zen Temple Cuisine Demonstration

Mari Fujii learnt the secrets of temple cuisine from her husband Sotetsu Fujii, who was a Buddhist monk for over thirty years. She has published a number of cookbooks, including one in English (The Enlightened Kitchen), and has made regular appearances on television. Mari Fujii will give a short lecture on temple cuisine followed by cooking demonstration and degustation. She will be using local ingredients. There will be some audience participation – bring along your cook’s knife.

These workshops are for everyone, no previous experience is required. It is a great chance to meet two true masters of Zen Calligraphy and Zen Cuisine. The Calligraphy workshop and Cuisine demonstrations will be run concurrently, but it is possible to do both within the day.

Cost: £25 each event (concessions £15); Both events: £45 (concessions £25).
